Marianne - far far away

As long as I'm fine...

Yesterday I saw Blood Diamond (click for trailer) with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Connelly. It was an absolutely moving picture and a reminder of something that I too often forget: How lucky I am being born on this continent!
It also reminded me of how actively we in the Western World keep suppressing third world countries. Just as with the diamonds in this movie, the western world keeps taking advantage of resources of other countries. I know that at least in Sweden farmers sometimes burn the seeds and harvest in order to keep the prices high! How is it even thinkable when we know how people suffer in our world?

Here are some stats about children and poverty:
-In the last decade, more than 2 million children have died as a direct result of armed conflict
-More than 300,000 child soldiers are exploited in armed conflicts in over 30 countries around the world
-2 million children are believed to be exploited through the commercial sex trade
-Approximately 246 million children work
-171 million children work in hazardous conditions

The movie also addressed the issue of child soldiers.
